Cumnock Bus Station Update...

Writer's picture: Neill WattsNeill Watts

Following my call for a further meeting to discuss the damage and anti-social behaviour at the Cumnock Bus Station, this afternoon I was joined by other Cumnock elected members, East Ayrshire Council’s deputy CEO, Police Scotland Ayrshire and other Council Officers to inspect the current damage to the Cumnock Bus Station, including the smashed and missing glass panes, missing seats, a missing litter bin and to observe the broken glass spread across the area.

We had good discussions on site with regards to moving forward in a robust and sustainable way to repair the damage to the Cumnock Bus Station. In the next few days, East Ayrshire Council are putting extra resources into place to tidy up the rubbish and broken glass which is around the Bus Station area.

The Council and the anti-social behaviour unit will also step up its collaborative work with Police Scotland Ayrshire to have an even stronger focus on the anti-social behaviour which a minority in our community are expressing. The Police will also increase their presence around the Bus Station over the coming weeks and weekends where possible.

Following the site visit we all had a round table meeting at Rothesay House where we discussed the future repairs to the Bus Station and Council Officers will now work on a plan for this to be achieved in an aesthetically sustainable way, which all four Cumnock Ward Councillors are happy with, it is vitally important that we are not facing this level of damage again.

Today’s meeting was extremely positive and cross-party, we agreed the way forward to address this awful and unacceptable problem.

You can see in the picture that I am inspecting some of the new damage which has been caused to the Bus Station over the last few weeks. My thanks to Cllr. Jim McMahon and Cllr. June Kyle for also joining today's meeting which I had asked for so we could ensure that we have a cross-party consensus moving forward.

I will obviously keep you informed as new information becomes available.

Councillor Neill Watts
