Ayrshire MSP Sharon Dowey is encouraging young people to sign up for free bus travel in East Ayrshire and is urging the SNP to better promote the scheme.
This comes after a Freedom of Information request revealed one in four people aged 5-21 in East Ayrshire are yet to sign up for their National Entitlement Card with free travel.
Sharon Dowey MSP has said that while free bus travel is a welcome move to support young people with the cost-of-living crisis and meet our Net Zero ambitions, the Scottish Government must do more to promote the scheme.
Commenting, Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Sharon Dowey said:
“While it is welcome that young people across Scotland are able to access free bus travel, particularly during the cost-of-living crisis, it would be great to see a higher uptake in East Ayrshire.
“During the launch of the free bus travel scheme, the application process was complex and the SNP Government failed to promote it properly. As a result, one in four young people in East Ayrshire are yet to apply."
“That’s why I’m urging the SNP to promote the scheme as widely as possible to make sure young people are aware of the support available.
“If you are yet to apply for your National Entitlement Card in East Ayrshire, I would really encourage you to submit your application to help you save money while commuting by bus”.
